The jobs that no longer exist

The world is changing fast. New technologies have brought about major changes in the business sector, so that some occupations that were common and very popular a hundred years ago, no longer exist today. Not only do they not exist, but for no one else even knows that they existed. This is a list of once common and popular occupations that have disappeared in the last hundred years.

Bowling alley pinsetters were, as the name implies, people who were in charge of placing pins in bowling alleys before automation. So when someone would tear down pins, their job was to put them back in their place. It was a low-paying job mostly done by teens and students.

This profession was very popular in the UK and Ireland. In some areas it existed even up to the 1970s. People pursuing this occupation knocked with a stick on windows to wake people up. For centuries, street lamps had to be manually lit and extinguished as well as maintained. This was done by people who called themselves lamplighters. This occupation was common and very popular, especially in the 19th century. Later, the industry did its own thing so the lamps could be lit automatically. But this occupation still has not completely disappeared. If you didn't know, Zagreb is the only city in the world that still has hand-lit public lighting. The Zagreb City Gas Plant, which is responsible for gas public lighting, currently has two lighters, and one of them is about to retire.

Before the advent of the first computers, there were so-called human computers. And although women have often been undervalued throughout history, this is another practice that shows that women have far outnumbered men. Namely, this business was mostly done by women who participated on the design, development of weapons during World War II and programming of the first electronic devices.
